Frequently Asked Questions
Under GST 2.0 (effective 22 September 2025), India has four main GST rates: 0% (Nil) on most unbranded essentials, 5% on common goods like packaged food, apparel and medicines, 18% as the standard rate for most goods and services, and 40% on sin and luxury items such as aerated drinks and large cars. A few niche rates remain: 3% on gold and jewellery, 1.5% on diamonds, 0.25% on rough precious stones, and 28% (plus cess) on tobacco and pan masala. The earlier 12% and 28% general slabs were removed.
Type the product name (like “laptop”, “mobile phone” or “rice”) into the search box above and the GST Rate Finder shows the applicable GST 2.0 rate along with its HSN code. You can also tap a slab (0%, 5%, 18% or 40%) to browse goods at that rate. For the exact rate on a specific variant, check the full HSN code using our HSN Code Finder, because some headings cover products taxed at different rates.
The 56th GST Council meeting, effective 22 September 2025, simplified the rate structure. The 12% and 28% general slabs were removed: most 12% items moved to 5% and most 28% items moved to 18%, while a new 40% slab was created for sin and luxury goods. Tobacco and pan masala stay at 28% plus compensation cess. This is why older GST rate lists are now inaccurate, and the rates shown here are mapped to the new GST 2.0 structure verified against CBIC.
Mobile phones (HSN 8517) and laptops (HSN 8471) both attract 18% GST. Gold (HSN 7108) and gold jewellery (HSN 7113) attract 3% GST. Most consumer electronics such as televisions, refrigerators and air conditioners are at 18%, while rice, medicines and apparel are at 5%. Use the search above to confirm the rate for your exact product.
Yes. GST is a single nationwide tax, so the GST rate on a product is the same in every state and union territory. What changes is the split: an intra-state sale is taxed as CGST plus SGST (half each), while an inter-state sale is taxed as IGST (the full rate). The total rate a customer pays is identical wherever they are in India.
