TallyPrime 4.0, released by Tally Solutions on November 27, 2023, brought three flagship features: WhatsApp for Business invoice sharing, MS Excel data import, and a customizable graphical dashboard. The release also packaged a set of GST and TDS compliance updates that Indian businesses had been waiting for. This guide breaks down every feature, the GST changes, and whether 4.0 is the right upgrade target in 2026 (spoiler: probably not. TallyPrime 7.0 is the current version, with SmartFind and the Invoice Management System).

A] New Features in TallyPrime 4.0
1. WhatsApp for Business Integration
The biggest visible change: any voucher or report in TallyPrime can now go directly to a contact's WhatsApp. Invoices, payment reminders, balance confirmations, ledger statements. One click from the voucher screen.
The integration runs through Interakt, Tally's official Business Solution Provider (BSP). You sign up once from inside TallyPrime; after that, your business WhatsApp number is connected. Customers see the message arrive from your branded number with the document attached as a PDF.
Why it matters: WhatsApp open rates in India are an order of magnitude higher than email for transactional messages, in our experience with Mumbai SMB clients. Payment reminders that get read get paid faster.
2. MS Excel Data Import
Before 4.0, the only structured import path was XML. With 4.0 you can map an Excel file directly to TallyPrime masters and transactions. Column names do not need to match a fixed template; you map them at import time.
Useful for: migrating from another accounting tool, bulk-loading opening balances at year-end, and quickly entering bank statements where you exported a CSV from net banking. The import log shows row-level errors so you can fix bad data without redoing the whole import.
3. Graphical Dashboard
The dashboard is a screen of configurable tiles that show cash flow, profit, top customers, top items sold, GST liability and more. You add or remove tiles as you need them.
Most businesses use this as a daily morning check from the owner or finance lead. Before 4.0 you had to open several reports to see the same numbers; now they sit on one screen at Gateway of Tally.

B] GST, TDS, and Compliance Updates in 4.0
TallyPrime 4.0 packaged several smaller GST/TDS improvements per the official release notes:
- GSTR-3B QRMP single-JSON export. QRMP dealers can export the quarterly GSTR-3B as one consolidated JSON instead of three monthly files. Saves time at quarterly filing.
- Party GSTIN/UIN in ITC Available section. The Input Tax Credit Available section now shows GSTIN/UIN per party, useful for reconciling against GST 2B. Cross-check tax amounts with our free GST calculator before filing.
- Cancelled voucher counts in GSTR-1 Document Summary. Cancelled invoices appear in the document summary so the count reconciles with what you uploaded to the GST portal.
- GST ledger support in RCM and URD purchases. Reverse charge purchases and purchases from unregistered dealers can now carry GST ledgers and flow into the returns correctly.
- GST rate override updates amounts automatically. When you override the GST rate on a voucher, TallyPrime recalculates the GST amount even if "Use Common Ledger for Item Allocation" is set to No.
- GSTIN/UIN on Job Work Out Orders. Single GSTIN prints from More Details; multi-GST setups print the registration number and State Code automatically.
- GSTR-1 export after migrating from other software. Cleaner export path for businesses that migrated mid-year and need to file returns from TallyPrime.
- TDS / TCS forms updated to FVU Tool 8.2. Salary TDS Form 24Q, TDS Forms 26Q + 27Q, and TCS Form 27EQ all match the latest FVU schema. The vouchers covered under Import of Services in ITC reversal rules also reconcile cleanly in GSTR-3B 4A.
Previous and current balance sheet invoicing was also added in 4.0: you can print previous and current balances on invoices, which makes customer-side ledger reconciliation faster. TallyEdge access from the Exchange menu and TallyPrime on AWS exploration from the Help menu rounded out the smaller usability changes.
Should I upgrade to TallyPrime 4.0 in 2026?
If you are on TallyPrime 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, or Tally ERP 9 in 2026: upgrade directly to TallyPrime 7.0, not 4.0. TallyPrime 7.0 includes SmartFind (Ctrl+F universal search), the Invoice Management System (IMS), and all the features 4.0 introduced. There is no reason to land on an older version.
4.0 remains useful as a reference for: businesses locked to that version by an ERP integration constraint, partners diagnosing issues for customers still on 4.0, or anyone wanting to see what changed between 3.x and the current Tally lineup.
TSS (Tally Software Services) covers free upgrades within your license tier. If your TSS lapsed, you will need to renew TSS before downloading a newer version.
